Sam Barnes

Originally from rural North Wales, his love for music developed as a child when he started receiving guitar lessons. Soon turning towards a 4-track cassette tape recorder as a tool for composition. As well as being a composer, songwriter and performing musician, Sam is a specialist sound recordist, working regularly in the realms of new British jazz and folk, as well as his own groups Shoebox Orchestra and Boy Azooga.
Shortly after graduating from the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Sam was awarded the Oxford / Sennheiser Electronic Music Prize (OSEMP).
Sam joined the John Hardy Music team in 2014, focussing at first on the Alchemy album project (Ffin Records) and the eight-hour score for the highly acclaimed ILIAD (National Theatre Wales), then Visit Wales: Find Your Epic, working closely with John Hardy and Pete Smith. In 2015 he joined the team working on the third series of Hinterland / Y Gwyll. Sam assists in the management of John Hardy Music sister company Ffin Records.
